This well-documented 1978 Volkswagen Type 2 Westfalia Campmobile is offered for sale. Delivered new through Merrill Motors, Inc. in Price, Utah, its original M-Plate confirms the P27 Deluxe Camping Equipment package and 073 pop-up roof. Repainted in its factory-specified Dakota Beige with a beige and brown plaid Westfalia camping interior, it is powered by a correct-type GE-code 2.0-liter fuel-injected air-cooled flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transmission.
Included are a rear-hatch screen, additional tents and an assortment of period camping accessories. An impressive collection of original documentation accompanies the Bus, including its original window sticker, Volkswagen owner’s manual, Campmobile manual, Warranty & Maintenance booklet, warranty voucher, Dometic refrigerator literature and additional camping-equipment manuals, along with later registration records and a clear California title.
The 2.0-liter fuel-injected air-cooled flat-four features a period-correct GE-code engine case and was professionally rebuilt in 2016, with the rebuild documented by service records and an identification tag on the engine. It starts readily, runs and idles smoothly, and pulls smoothly through the gears. The four-speed manual transmission shifts effortlessly, while power-assisted brakes with front discs and four-wheel independent suspension provide a tight, confident feel on the road. Overall, this Westfalia is comfortable, responsive and genuinely enjoyable to drive.
The exterior has been repainted in Dakota Beige and has a deep shine with an attractive, clean presentation. The glass, chrome, trim, lighting and brightwork all show well, while the white bumpers and front-mounted spare with its matching white cover provide the classic Westfalia look. The original-style 14-inch painted steel wheels with chrome VW hubcaps are wrapped in Hankook 195R14C tires at all four corners with good tread depth remaining. Exterior features include jalousie windows, a shore-power connection, water hookup, utility vents and an underbody propane tank. Panel fit is generally good, the body looks straight, and only minor age-related imperfections are evident on close inspection.
The interior retains its classic Westfalia character and is remarkably complete. The front cabin features plaid cloth seats with brown vinyl trim, a clean original-style dashboard, four-speed floor shifter and Alpine stereo, while the camper area retains its attractive woodgrain cabinetry, matching plaid upholstery, curtains and period fittings.
Camping accommodations include a fold-out rear bed, upper sleeping berth, folding dining table, stainless-steel sink, two-burner propane stove, Dometic refrigerator, storage cabinets and jalousie windows for ventilation. The pop-top is fitted with a newer tent that presents very well, and the original Westfalia-Werke Campmobile identification plate remains in place. Overall, the interior has a wonderfully authentic, lightly aged appearance and shows exceptionally well for a nearly 50-year-old camper.
This is a unique opportunity to own a well-presented 1978 Volkswagen Westfalia Campmobile combining the unmistakable character of Volkswagen’s late Bay Window Bus with the versatility of its thoughtfully designed camper configuration. With its desirable 2.0-liter fuel-injected engine, four-speed manual transmission, attractive Dakota Beige finish, highly complete Westfalia interior, extensive accessories and unusually comprehensive documentation, it has much to offer the vintage VW enthusiast. Whether enjoyed for weekend getaways, road trips, shows or simply as a fun vintage Volkswagen, this Westfalia is ready for its next chapter.
