Shantung Yellow 1970 VW Karmann Ghia Convertible for Sale
This 1970 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Convertible, a Type 14 built in August 1969, is finished in Shantung Yellow with a black vinyl interior and a newer canvas top. Acquired by its current owner in 2016, it has been driven sparingly, under 2,000 miles in nine years, and received several mechanical improvements to ensure reliable performance. Showing 97,859 miles (actual mileage unknown), this driver-quality example is ready for weekend cruises.
The body sports a consumer-level repaint in its original Shantung Yellow, offering a smooth, glossy finish with minor imperfections. The front nose is unhit, fenders are original, and the side and original glass rear convertible window remain intact. Most chrome and trim are original, showing typical wear for their age.
The canvas top, paired with the original headliner, fits well and operates smoothly. It rides on Nexen steel-belted radials with older removable "Porta wall" whitewalls, adding a period-correct look. The undercarriage has been recently refurbished and sealed, though there is very minor degradation at the lower front of the trunk below the spare tire. The trunk is original, equipped with a new liner and spare tire.
The 4-cylinder air-cooled engine, replaced at some point in the car's history, runs well with compression between 135-145 psi across all cylinders. Recent maintenance includes a full tune-up with new spark plugs, points, fuel filter, valve cover gaskets, vacuum hoses, battery, and oil change. The 4-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly, and the brakes are in good condition, with 75% life remaining at the rear and 65%+ at the front. The car starts easily and handles with the characteristic Karmann Ghia charm.
The interior combines original black vinyl with newer carpeting, showing some age but remaining comfortable and presentable. A Hermosa retro radio with Bluetooth and streaming provides modern convenience while maintaining a vintage aesthetic. Gauges and lights function properly, (clock is inoperable), creating a pleasant environment for top-down drives.
