Take a Closer Look at This Nice Classic 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL for Sale

1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL for sale. This California car has been with the same owners now for over 20 years and still sports early 1980's issue blue and gold California license plates. This is a nice, driver-quality Pagoda ready to enjoy.

It has had two documented long-time owners between 1985 and today and a significant cache of service records.

This W113 starts; runs and drives well. The original motor is quiet and smooth and sounds strong and healthy. The shifting and handling are tight and accurate. It has newer Bilstein shocks and a nice set of Pirelli Classics all around. All and all it is a very nice driving car.

The exterior is in good, overall condition. The color change from Dark Olive occurred before current ownership, presumably in the 1990s or thereabouts. The car is rust-free and a walk-around magnet test shows it to have minimal to no filler.

The headlamp/fender notches are present and the spot welds on the inner fenders are present. The undercarriage is solid and rust-free along with the rocker panels and elsewhere.

The interior is comfortable and appears mostly original. Under the cover, the dash pad and wood need to be refreshed. The seats are comfortable, panels look nice. The carpet is a bit sun-faded. The gauges and switches are in working order though the factory A/C is not. The blinkers, horn, wipers, lights all are in working order.

I will check the Becker Europa and report back. The hardtop is in good shape and the soft top needs to be replaced. We can arrange this at a discounted rate should its new owner desire.

Finally, this W113 was assigned a salvage title designation by a prior insurance company though I cannot find prior damage to justify. I went through all of the repair orders and in 1985 there is a receipt showing an enormous amount of parts replaced making me think it was stolen decades ago and the owner paid off prior to its recovery.

These are the only two ways such branding can occur. While I am fairly well-versed in vintage Mercedes-Benz cars and have had many in my inventory over the years (especially the W113), I invite questions and insight from others and I am always happy to facilitate any inspections.

I scanned all of its repair records, click here to download a pdf file. The repair order I am referring to is on Page 59. I also am providing over 350 photos. These photos are available in high resolution also by request.
