For sale is a breathtaking 1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL R-Code, a rare and collectible West Coast classic with just 43,782 miles, believed to be original and backed by its remarkably preserved condition.
Purchased new on January 4, 1964, from Doherty Motor Company in Forest Grove, Oregon, this Galaxie was delivered in Guardsman Blue with a matching blue vinyl bucket seat interior. This two-door fastback, built in Twin Cities, Minnesota, is loaded with factory options, including the legendary 427 cubic inch V8 high-performance engine, a close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission, a 6-way power driver seat, AM/FM radio, retractable seat belts, tinted glass, two-speed electric wipers with washer, and padded dash and visor.
It includes the original window sticker ($4,341.05 MSRP), retail buyer’s order, owner’s manual with buyer information, service book, and photos of its enthusiastic previous owner receiving the car in 2013.
The original owner moved this Galaxie to California shortly after purchase, where it was lightly used for years before being parked and stored for many years by its second owner, preserving its low mileage. In 2013, its third owner acquired it with presumably mid-30,000 miles and treated it to a high-quality repaint in its original Guardsman Blue, along with a respectful recommissioning of the ancillaries, suspension, tires, braking, and fuel system.
The result is a rust-free, road-ready classic with new rubber seals, period-correct California black-and-gold license plates, and a combination of original and refreshed/rechromed trim. The original painted steel wheels with factory hubcaps are wrapped in Hankook Optima H724 whitewall tires (P215/75 R15), completing its period look.
Under the hood, the rare R-Code 427 cubic inch V8, a race-bred powerhouse with dual 4-barrel carburetors and chrome valve covers, roars to life effortlessly and runs strong, delivering the performance that made Ford a NASCAR and drag racing legend. Paired with a close-ratio 4-speed manual transmission, it shifts crisply, offering an exhilarating driving experience.
The suspension and braking systems have been refreshed, ensuring tight handling and confident stops. The engine bay is remarkably preserved, complete with the original FoMoCo wiper-washer bag, a testament to this car’s careful stewardship. Various numbers are stamped/cast throughout the driveline. I have taken photos of what I could find and have included them.
Inside, the original blue vinyl bucket seat interior is a time capsule, with surprisingly well-preserved seating, panels, dash, headliner, and carpeting. The center console, under-dash gauges (oil, amperage, and temperature), and factory AM/FM radio add to the period charm, and all systems—dash lights, wipers, and gauges—are in good working order.
The clean trunk houses the original spare tire and jack, while the inner rockers and quarter panels remain pristine. This is a cockpit that blends luxury and performance, perfect for long cruises or car show displays.
This 1964 Galaxie 500XL R-Code is a rare preservation classic, combining its low-mileage originality with thoughtful updates to make it reliable and road-ready.
