Some collector cars are restored. Others are simply preserved through decades of careful ownership. Very few remain with the same family from the day they were purchased new. This 1958 Chevrolet Corvette is one of those cars.
Purchased new in January 1958 by Benny E. Gagliardo of Healdsburg, California, this Corvette has remained in the same family ever since. Following Mr. Gagliardo's passing, ownership transferred to his maternal great-nephew, preserving an unbroken chain of family ownership documented by an exceptional collection of California registrations spanning nearly seven decades.
Finished in Snowcrest White over a red interior, this early-production Corvette is equipped with its 230-horsepower, 283-cubic-inch V8, factory three-speed manual transmission, and removable factory hardtop. Included with the car are its original owner's literature, period family photographs, California registrations documenting continuous family ownership from new, a small collection of service records, and a clear California title.
As with every vehicle we represent, we carefully documented every casting number, date code, identification stamp, and factory marking we could locate. More than 620 high-resolution photographs accompany the car, documenting virtually every aspect of its condition, originality, drivetrain, chassis, and major components. The engine is stamped F1211CQ, identifying it as a Flint-built, 230-horsepower Corvette engine assembled on December 11, 1957. The block casting number, cylinder head castings, intake manifold, generator, transmission casting, and numerous additional components were photographed and documented. The original fiberglass bonding strips remain intact, factory blue grease-pencil markings remain visible on the underside of the body, and many of the small factory assembly details collectors look for are still present. Every component we could reasonably access was inspected and documented without unnecessarily disturbing the car.
The 283 starts easily, settles into a smooth idle, and performs well throughout the rev range. The factory three-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly through all gears, while the steering, suspension, and brakes operate as expected. The engine compartment presents as an honest, well-preserved example with the natural finishes and patina one would expect from a carefully maintained automobile rather than one that has been cosmetically restored.
The Snowcrest White exterior retains the styling features unique to the 1958 model year, including the hood louvers, quad headlights, chrome trunk trim, and sculptured side coves. The chrome, stainless trim, glass, and exterior brightwork complement the car's preserved character. During our inspection, we noted evidence of what appears to be localized cosmetic touch-up work in a few areas, including light paint on the edge of the driver's door latch and minor paint on portions of the lower front chrome trim.
We did not observe evidence suggesting a complete repaint or signs of significant collision damage or major body repairs. The body retains its original bonding strips, an increasingly uncommon feature on C1 Corvettes. Also included is the car's original removable factory hardtop, complete with its original Plexiglas side windows bearing factory markings, original hardware, and original red headliner.
Inside, the red interior reflects decades of careful ownership rather than restoration. The seats retain their original construction along with their factory spring tags, while the dashboard, gauges, door panels, trim, and steering wheel display the natural aging expected of an unrestored automobile. The overall presentation is consistent with the car's documented mileage and long-term ownership history. During our inspection, we carefully attempted to remove the original rubber trunk mat to inspect the spare tire compartment. Unfortunately, after nearly seventy years, the rubber had become extremely brittle and disintegrated during removal.
The accompanying documentation tells much of the Corvette's story. While service records are limited, the continuous California registration history establishes uninterrupted one-family ownership from new and provides an unusually complete chain of ownership. Original owner's literature, period family photographs, and additional historical paperwork further support the car's history. Combined with the extensive photographic documentation of the vehicle itself, the next caretaker will have an unusually detailed record of both the car and its provenance.
Early C1 Corvettes are no longer difficult to find. Examples that have remained in the same family since new, retain this level of originality and authenticity, and are accompanied by nearly seventy years of documented ownership history are considerably less common.
